How to orderSpecifications
Custom Outdoor Signs are building-mounted, post-mounted, or fence-mounted signs printed in full-color CMYK directly onto weather-rated substrates. Aluminum is the most common material for permanent outdoor use. These signs suit any business needing exterior identification, storefront branding, or property wayfinding that holds up for years without reordering.
- Material
- .040 aluminum (roughly 1mm, the industry-standard gauge for commercial outdoor signs), rust-proof. PVC and composite options available for fence and post applications where lighter weight matters.Aluminum resists rust and holds its shape through freeze-thaw cycles that warp lighter materials.
- Print Method
- Direct UV print applies ink straight to the sign surface and cures it instantly with ultraviolet light. The result is a scratch-resistant, waterproof finish that doesn't peel or bubble under normal outdoor conditions.
- Color Output
- CMYK full color using cyan, magenta, yellow, and black.Reproduces logos, photos, and text across the full color range without spot-color limits.
- Finishing
- Pre-drilled holes for screw or standoff mounting come standard on aluminum. Engineer grade reflective coating (a surface that bounces headlight beams back toward the driver) is available for night visibility.Post-mount and hanging options are also available at checkout.
- Size Range
- Standard sizes run 12x18, 18x24, and 24x36 in. Custom dimensions are available.Custom sizing suits building facades, fence runs, and post-mounted applications needing non-standard proportions.
- Indoor/Outdoor Rating
- Aluminum is rated for 5 or more years of direct outdoor exposure. PVC typically holds up 2 to 3 years in direct sun and rain.Covered or semi-sheltered locations extend PVC life noticeably.
- Single/Double-Sided
- Both options are available. Double-sided suits post-mounted signs readable from two directions, such as at a driveway entrance.Single-sided covers most wall and fence applications.
- Weight
- Aluminum at .040 thickness is rigid and sturdy without being heavy.Wall and post mounting stays manageable without specialized equipment.

Direct UV Print on Weather-Rated Aluminum, PVC, or Composite
Direct UV print bonds ink to aluminum, PVC, or composite instantly. The ultraviolet curing process gives you a scratch-resistant, waterproof finish that holds color through rain, heat, and direct sun for 5 or more years outdoors. No peeling. No bubbling. Every sign runs through UV curing before it leaves the shop, so what you approve on the proof is what mounts to your building.
Weather resistance gets full treatment here. Turnaround speed stays fast.
Building, Post, and Fence Mounting Across Standard and Custom Sizes
Standard sizes run 12x18, 18x24, and 24x36 in. Custom dimensions are available for facade runs or fence spans that fall outside those proportions. Every sign ships ready for building-mount, post-mount, or fence-mount, so you don't need to source hardware separately. Pre-drilled holes come standard on aluminum. And post-mount brackets plus standoff mounts (small metal spacers that hold the sign away from the surface, creating a floating effect) are both available at checkout.
Sizing options get full treatment in How to Choose. Ease of setup covered briefly here.
Full-Color CMYK Output With Free Digital Proof Before Production
CMYK full-color output covers every sign we produce. That's the 4-color process using cyan, magenta, yellow, and black, so logos, photos, and text all reproduce across the full color range without spot-color limits. Worth knowing: a free digital proof shows your exact layout, hole placement, and corner style before we run a single sheet. You don't approve it, we don't print it.
Bold output. Zero guessing on color accuracy.

Ideal for
Not the best fit for
Vehicle branding sits outside what outdoor signs handle. These signs are built for buildings and fixed property surfaces. Magnetic Signs cover removable vehicle branding without adhesive or surface damage.
Temporary event or promotional signage lasting under 6 months costs more per use on aluminum than it needs to. Custom Banners give you flexible, rollable messaging at a lower cost for short runs.
Ground-staked lawn or yard placement calls for a different product entirely. Yard and Lawn Signs with H-stakes are built for that use case and cost less for short-term outdoor runs.
How to choose
Use these buying points to choose the right Custom Outdoor Signs configuration.
-
Aluminum Versus PVC for Your Outdoor Location
Here's the thing: not every outdoor location hits the same weather. Aluminum at .040 thickness (roughly 1 mm, the commercial standard) handles direct sun, rain, and wind for 5 or more years without warping or rusting. PVC works well for covered or semi-sheltered spots, such as a carport column or covered breezeway. Direct weather exposure is lower there, and typical durability runs 2 to 3 years. Check whether your sign faces full outdoor exposure or partial shelter before picking a material.
-
Matching Your Mounting Method to Your Surface
Building walls and fences take pre-drilled screw mounts, which come standard on aluminum signs. Posts need a post-mount bracket. Standoff mounts (small metal spacers that hold the sign away from the surface, creating a floating effect) suit exterior walls where a finished look matters. Pick your surface first, then select the matching mount option in the configurator.
-
Standard Sizes Versus Custom Dimensions
Most exterior door and suite identification needs fit a standard 18x24 in sign. A 24x36 in sign reads clearly from roughly 50 ft, which covers storefront and building facade placement. Go custom if your mounting area runs wider than 36 in or taller than 24 in.
-
Adding Reflective Coating for Night or Low-Light Visibility
Engineer grade reflective coating bounces headlight beams back toward drivers, so your sign stays readable after dark without added lighting. Order reflective if your sign sits at a parking lot entrance, driveway, or any spot where vehicles approach after dark. It is not necessary for signs mounted above eye level on a lit building facade.
Pair it with
Sidewalk and Curb-Level Visibility
Your building-mounted outdoor sign covers the facade, but it doesn't close the gap between the curb and your entrance. An A-Frame Sign at sidewalk level catches foot traffic at eye level. Your wall sign handles visibility from across the street. Together, you get two coverage layers from road to door.
Temporary Messaging Alongside Your Permanent Sign
Seasons change, promotions rotate, and events come and go. Custom Banners handle short-run messaging that swaps out throughout the year while your outdoor sign handles the fixed building identification that never needs replacing. Custom Flags at the property entrance pull eyes from the road before visitors reach the sign.
Complete the Building's Exterior Face
Window Decals and Door Decals brand the glass surfaces directly below or beside your outdoor sign. Together they cover every visible exterior surface without gaps, from the mounted sign above to the door and glass at street level.
Material-Specific Alternatives
Already know you want aluminum specifically? Metal Signs targets that same outdoor use case with material-specific sizing and keyword options. Acrylic Signs handle the lobby and interior when your signage needs move inside.
FAQs
Will the Print on My Outdoor Sign Fade After One Summer of Direct Sun?
Direct UV print bonds ink to the aluminum surface and cures it instantly with ultraviolet light, giving you a scratch-resistant, waterproof finish. Aluminum signs carry a 5 or more year outdoor rating under direct sun and rain. PVC signs typically hold color well for 2 to 3 years in direct exposure. Neither substrate peels or bubbles under normal outdoor conditions.
How Do I Know the Mounting Holes Will Line Up With My Wall or Post Before the Sign Ships?
Your free digital proof shows exact hole placement, corner style, and layout before we run a single sheet through production. Note your mounting surface and spacing needs in the order form, and we position the holes accordingly. And if your wall uses standoff mounts (small metal spacers that float the sign off the surface), we adjust the hole pattern to match. We do not start production until you approve that proof.
What Happens if My Sign Arrives Damaged or the Colors Do Not Match My Approved Proof?
Contact us and we reprint it at no charge. The approved proof is the standard we print to, so a color mismatch or shipping damage triggers a free reprint, not a back-and-forth. Bring your proof approval and your order number, and we get the replacement into production within 1 business day.
How Fast Can I Get Signs Produced for a Business Opening or Property Deadline?
Aluminum and composite signs typically ship in 2 to 3 business days. Orders placed before 12 PM EST go into production the same day. Multi-sign packages with mixed materials run 3 to 5 business days depending on quantity. That said, upload your file early and approve your proof quickly, because production starts only after approval clears.
What Material Works Best for Custom Outdoor Signs That Need to Last 5 or More Years?
Aluminum at .040 thickness is the right call. It is rust-proof, holds up through direct sun and rain, and carries a 5 or more year outdoor rating. PVC is a lighter alternative for semi-sheltered spots but is not rated for the same durability in full weather. For any sign staying up through multiple winters, aluminum is the material to order.
Get your artwork right
Resolution determines how sharp your text and logo look once printed at full sign size. We accept PDF, PNG, JPG, and AI files. AI (vector format) is the best choice for logos because it scales to any size without losing edge clarity.
- Resolution
- Set your file to a minimum 150 DPI at final print size, though 300 DPI is what we recommend for any sign under 4 ft wide. At that size, viewers get close enough to spot a soft edge on text or fine detail in a logo. Also set your color mode to CMYK before exporting. RGB is the default for screens, but CMYK is how we print. Converting before you send keeps your colors from shifting between what you see on screen and what comes off the press.
- Bleed
- Add 0.25 in of bleed (extra artwork extending past the trim line on all four sides) so no white edges appear after cutting. Keep all text and logos at least 0.5 in inside the trim edge. Specify mounting hole placement in your order notes if you need holes in non-standard positions.
Not ready to upload a file? Use our free online design tool or add our professional design service at checkout. Upload your sign artwork and our team sends you a free digital proof showing the exact print layout, mounting holes, and corner style within 24 hours.

Care instructions
Aluminum Signs
- Aluminum outdoor signs need almost no upkeep. Wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap to clear dirt or road grime. Do not use solvent-based cleaners on reflective-coated surfaces, as solvents dull the coating and cut night visibility.
- Check mounting hardware once a year for loosening, especially after a heavy wind season. UV-printed surfaces on aluminum do not peel or bubble under normal outdoor conditions, so surface damage typically means the substrate itself took a hit. Contact us for a reorder if a panel shows physical damage.
PVC Signs
- PVC outdoor signs wipe clean with a damp cloth. Avoid abrasive scrubbers that can scratch the UV-printed surface.
- Inspect mounting points seasonally if your sign faces direct wind exposure. But routine cleaning is it. No special products needed.
