How to orderSpecifications
Custom Aluminum Signs run on .040 aluminum (roughly 1 mm thick), UV printed in full color and rated for 5 to 10 or more years of outdoor exposure. Three standard sizes cover most permanent building and property installs. Here is what you get on every order.
- Material
- .040 aluminum. Rigid, rust-proof, and holds its flat shape in rain, snow, humidity, and coastal salt air without any protective coating.
- Print Method
- Direct UV printing. Ink bonds directly to the metal surface and cures instantly, giving you a scratch-resistant finish that does not peel or bubble.
- Color Output
- Full-color CMYK across the entire panel face. CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black) reproduces bold logos, photographs, and detailed text at sharp resolution.
- Finishing
- Straight or rounded corners available. Pre-drilled mounting holes at all 4 corners standard. Order undrilled if your mount does not need them.
- Size Range
- Three standard sizes: 12x18 in, 18x24 in, and 36x24 in. All dimensions are width by height.
- Indoor/Outdoor Rating
- Rated for 5 to 10 or more years outdoors. UV-printed graphics resist fading for 5 to 7 years of direct sun. Indoor lifespan extends well beyond 10 years.
- Single/Double-Sided
- Single-sided prints one face. Double-sided prints both faces of the same panel for post-mounted or hanging signs facing two directions.
- Weight
- Lighter than steel at the same thickness. Wall and post mounting stays manageable without heavy-duty anchors on most surfaces.

.040 Aluminum Base With Direct UV Color Printing
.040 aluminum (roughly 1 mm thick, the industry-standard gauge for commercial signs) gives you a rigid, rust-proof base that holds its flat shape in rain, snow, and coastal salt air for 5 to 10 or more years. Direct UV printing bonds ink directly to the metal surface and cures instantly under UV light. The result: a scratch-resistant finish that does not peel, crack, or bubble the way adhesive vinyl overlays can. Sturdy substrate. Crisp color. No protective coating needed.
A2Z Printing Hub runs direct UV on every aluminum panel we produce, so your logo and text stay bold across the full outdoor lifespan.
Pre-Drilled Mounting Holes or Undrilled, Your Choice
Pre-drilled holes at all 4 corners let you bolt the sign to a wall, fence, or post the same day it arrives. No sourcing a drill. No measuring hole placement on-site. But if your mounting method uses a rail system, adhesive, or a custom bracket that places fasteners differently, order undrilled and position hardware where your install actually needs it. Select your preference in the configurator before checkout.
Single or Double Sided on a Rust-Proof Panel
Double-sided printing puts your full-color message on both faces of one panel. Useful for signs mounted on a post or hung at a property entrance, where people approach from two directions. Single-sided covers any sign that mounts flat against a wall or fence where only one face is visible. One panel. Both directions read clearly. No ordering two separate signs.

Ideal for
Not the best fit for
Temporary or rotating promotional messages that change monthly. Reprinting metal for short-run messaging is not cost-effective. Custom Banners handle seasonal outdoor messaging at a fraction of the cost.
Lobby or reception displays where a frosted or transparent look is the goal. Acrylic Signs mounted on standoffs give you that clean, floating-panel aesthetic that aluminum cannot match.
Vehicle surfaces where you need a sign that applies and removes without drilling. Magnetic Signs are built exactly for that use case.
How to choose
Use these buying points to choose the right Custom Aluminum Signs configuration.
-
Daytime Visibility Versus Night Visibility From a Moving Vehicle
Standard .040 aluminum with full-color UV print covers every daytime application without exception. But if your sign must be readable from a car after dark, such as a parking lot entrance, driveway marker, or address sign, standard aluminum is not the right call. Choose Reflective Aluminum Signs instead. Those use engineer-grade reflective sheeting (a coating that bounces headlight beams back toward the driver) on the same .040 aluminum base, so the sign reads clearly in headlights without any power source.
-
Wall or Fence Mount Versus Post Mount
Your mounting surface determines how you configure the holes. For wall or fence mounting, order with pre-drilled holes at all 4 corners and use screws with wall anchors or masonry fasteners. For post mounting, bolt through the pre-drilled holes to a U-channel or square post with nuts and washers. Select your mounting method in the configurator so hole placement matches your install. Undrilled panels are also available if your mounting method doesn't use through-bolts at all.
-
Permanent Metal Sign Versus a Lower-Cost Replaceable Option
Here's the thing: aluminum makes financial sense only when your message stays fixed for years. A sign that lasts 5 to 10 or more years costs less per year of use than foam board or vinyl replaced annually. But if your message changes more than once a year, aluminum is not the cost-effective choice. Order Custom Banners for seasonal or rotating messages and reserve aluminum for the permanent identification sign that holds its position for the long run.
-
Single-Sided Versus Double-Sided Based on Viewing Direction
Order single-sided if your sign mounts flat against a wall or fence where only one face is visible. Order double-sided if the sign hangs from a bracket or mounts on a post where people approach from two directions. Double-sided printing puts your full-color message on both faces of one panel, so both sides carry your message without ordering two separate signs.
Pair it with
Finish the Property Install at Ground Level
Your aluminum building sign handles permanent identification above eye level. Bring messaging down to the sidewalk and fill the gaps metal can't cover.
Night-Visibility Upgrade on the Same Aluminum Base
Standard UV print reads clearly in daylight. For parking lots, driveways, or address markers that must be readable from a moving car after dark, reflective sheeting on the same .040 aluminum panel is the answer.
Rotating Messaging Alongside Your Permanent Sign
Aluminum handles the sign that stays up for a decade. These products handle the message that changes with the season or the campaign, so you don't reprint metal every quarter.
Indoor Alternatives When Metal Looks Too Industrial
Aluminum is tough outdoors. But inside a lobby or reception area where a frosted or clear panel fits better, two other materials close the gap.
FAQs
Does .040 Aluminum Hold Up in Coastal Salt Air and Freeze-Thaw Winters Without Corroding?
Aluminum is naturally rust-proof and does not need a protective coating to resist corrosion. Unlike steel, it holds its shape through rain, snow, humidity, and coastal salt air without degrading. The .040 in panel itself will not corrode, though we do recommend stainless steel mounting hardware at coastal locations so the fasteners don't corrode even when the panel won't.
How Long Will the Printed Colors on My Sign Stay Sharp Before Fading?
UV-printed graphics on .040 aluminum resist fading for 5 to 7 years of direct sun exposure. Indoors, the lifespan extends well beyond 10 years because UV load is minimal. Colors may dull slightly after 5 or more years of full outdoor sun. The aluminum panel itself will not degrade, so you can reprint on the same panel type when visibility starts to drop.
Can I Install a Custom Aluminum Sign Myself, or Do I Need a Contractor?
Most installs are straightforward enough to do yourself. Wall and fence mounts use screws through the pre-drilled corner holes into wall anchors or masonry fasteners. Post mounts bolt through the same holes to a U-channel or square post with nuts and washers. Aluminum weighs significantly less than steel at the same thickness, so handling a 36x24 in panel solo is manageable on most surfaces without heavy-duty anchors.
What Happens If My Sign Arrives Damaged From Shipping?
Contact us and we reprint and reship at no cost to you. We ship aluminum signs flat in rigid cardboard packaging with corner protectors specifically to prevent edge damage in transit. But if damage does occur, we make it right without requiring you to return the original panel.
Are Metal Signs Worth the Cost Compared to Replacing Foam Board or Vinyl Every Year?
Worth knowing: a custom aluminum sign rated for 5 to 10 or more years costs less per year of use than replacing a cheaper sign annually. Foam board typically warps or fades within 12 months outdoors. Vinyl banners hold up 6 to 12 months in direct weather. Aluminum absorbs the higher upfront cost over a decade of use and does not need seasonal replacement.
Get your artwork right
Resolution determines how sharp your text and logo look on the finished panel. Submit files at 300 DPI (dots per inch, the measure of image detail) at the final print size. We accept 150 DPI at minimum, but anything under 300 DPI on an 18x24 in or smaller sign may show soft edges on fine text.
- Accepted formats
- PDF, PNG, JPG, or AI. Vector files (AI or PDF) scale without losing sharpness, so they're the best choice for logos and bold lettering.
- Color mode
- CMYK, not RGB. CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) is how we print, so what you see on screen matches what bonds to the aluminum surface. RGB files shift color at output.
- Bleed and safe zone
- Include 0.25 in of bleed on all four sides. Keep logos, text, and any critical content at least 0.5 in from edges and clear of pre-drilled hole positions.

Care instructions
Product care
- Aluminum doesn't rust, so routine care is simple. Wipe the sign face with a damp cloth and mild soap 1 to 2 times per year to clear dirt and grime. No wax, sealant, or protective coating is needed on the panel itself.
- Do not aim a pressure washer directly at the printed surface, and skip abrasive scrubbing pads. Either can dull the UV-printed ink layer over time. Inspect mounting hardware once a year. Outdoor signs in high-wind areas can loosen over time, so retighten screws and bolts as needed. Use stainless steel fasteners at coastal locations to prevent the hardware from corroding, even though the aluminum panel will not.
- UV-printed graphics may dull slightly after 5 or more years of direct sun. The panel itself will not degrade. Reprint the graphic on the same panel type when visibility starts to drop.
