How to orderSpecifications
Custom Metal Outdoor Signs are .040 aluminum panels UV-printed in full color and built for permanent outdoor use. Each panel resists rust, warping, and fading through years of direct sun, rain, and freeze cycles. Here is what goes into every sign.
- Material
- .040 aluminum (roughly 1 mm thick). This gauge does not rust, rot, or warp in rain, snow, humidity, or coastal salt air.
- Print Method
- Direct UV print.Ink bonds to the aluminum surface and cures instantly, giving you a scratch-resistant, waterproof finish.
- Color Output
- Full-color CMYK.CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black combined) runs on a white aluminum base for the most vivid color reproduction.
- Finishing
- Straight or rounded corners, buyer's choice.Rounded corners reduce sharp edges on signs mounted at shoulder height where people pass close by.
- Size Range
- 12x18 in, 18x24 in, and 36x24 in standard. Custom dimensions available on request.
- Indoor/Outdoor Rating
- Rated for outdoor use. UV-printed graphics typically hold up 5 to 7 years in direct sun.The aluminum panel itself lasts well beyond that with no rust or structural degradation.
- Single/Double-Sided
- Single-sided or double-sided printing available.Double-sided suits post-mounted signs readable from both directions at a driveway or parking lot entrance.
- Weight
- A 36x24 in panel weighs roughly 2 to 3 lbs. That keeps wall and fence mounting manageable without heavy anchoring hardware.

.040 Aluminum That Does Not Rust or Warp Outdoors
.040 aluminum (roughly 1 mm thick) is the industry-standard gauge for commercial outdoor signs. It holds up where other materials fail. Rain, snow, humidity, and coastal salt air do not corrode it. Temperature swings from freezing winters to hot summers will not cause the panel to warp or bow. Your sign stays flat and legible on a building facade or fence post for 5 or more years without a replacement order. Sturdy from day one. Still sturdy five winters later.
Direct UV Print in Full Color on Every Panel
UV printing bonds ink directly onto the aluminum surface using ultraviolet light, curing it instantly for a scratch-resistant, waterproof finish. The result is bold, full-color graphics that hold up through years of direct sun exposure without peeling or cracking. A2Z Printing Hub runs every panel through direct UV print, so your colors stay crisp from the first day the sign goes up to the last. Color accuracy is locked in at production, not guesswork afterward.
Three Sizes With Straight or Rounded Corners for Any Mounting Setup
Three standard sizes, 12x18 in, 18x24 in, and 36x24 in, cover door-adjacent address signs, storefront walls, and wide parking lot posts. No custom fabrication needed. Straight corners suit high-mounted building signs. Rounded corners reduce sharp edges on any sign mounted at shoulder height where people pass close by. Pick your size, select your corner style, and the panel fits your mounting location without modification.
Customer reviews
Ideal for
Not the best fit for
Seasonal or rotating messages that change every few months are not a good match for aluminum. Metal is a permanent material and is not cost-effective for short-run campaigns. Custom Banners handle seasonal messaging at a lower cost per cycle.
Buyers who want a transparent or frosted indoor look will find that aluminum is opaque and does not suit lobby or reception displays. Acrylic Signs give you a floating, clear finish that metal cannot match.
Temporary outdoor signage lasting under 6 months, such as event directionals or short-run promotions, fits Rigid Signs better at a lower cost per use.
How to choose
Use these buying points to choose the right Custom Metal Outdoor Signs configuration.
-
Matching Size to Your Mounting Location and Viewing Distance
The 12x18 in panel suits door-adjacent address signs and suite numbers where viewers stand within 10 ft. Most storefront wall signs readable from a sidewalk or parking row fit comfortably on an 18x24 in panel. Go with 36x24 in for any sign that needs to read from 30 ft or more, such as a building facade or a parking lot post. Pick your size, then set up your layout in the design tool.
-
Choosing Single-Sided or Double-Sided Printing
Single-sided printing covers most wall and fence applications where the sign faces one direction. Choose double-sided when the sign mounts on a post at a driveway entrance or parking lot aisle where drivers approach from both directions. Add double-sided in the configurator before uploading your artwork.
-
Matching Corner Style to Your Mounting Surface
Rounded corners are the safer choice for any sign mounted at shoulder height or below, where a person could brush against the edge. Straight corners work fine for high-mounted building signs or fence-mounted signs out of arm's reach. Select your corner style in the order configurator.
-
Knowing When Metal Beats a Lower-Cost Alternative
Here's the thing: aluminum is the right call when your sign needs to stay in place for 3 or more years without replacement. For anything under 6 months, Custom Banners cost less per use and handle seasonal messaging without wasted material. For a lobby or reception display, Acrylic Signs give you a frosted or clear finish that aluminum cannot match. Metal is opaque and does not suit that aesthetic. If the answer is permanent and outdoor, go with metal.
Pair it with
Seasonal Messaging on the Same Property
Your aluminum sign carries the permanent name, address, and hours. Custom Banners handle the rotating campaigns, grand opening announcements, and sale messaging that change through the year without replacing the metal sign.
Other Metal Options in the Same Family
Need the sign readable from a car at night? Custom Reflective Aluminum Signs add engineer-grade reflective sheeting (a retroreflective coating that bounces headlight beams back toward the driver) to the same .040 aluminum base.
When Aluminum Is Not the Right Fit
Metal is permanent and opaque. Acrylic Signs give you a frosted or clear standoff-mounted finish for interior lobbies where aluminum does not suit the aesthetic. Rigid Signs cover short-run indoor displays at a lower cost per unit when you do not need outdoor durability.
Complete the Full Property Presence
An A-Frame Sign at sidewalk level pulls foot traffic toward the door. The aluminum sign above identifies the building from across the lot. Custom Decals handle glass surfaces and windows where metal mounting is not possible.
FAQs
How Do Custom Metal Outdoor Signs Hold Up Through Freeze-Thaw Cycles and Heavy Rain?
.040 aluminum does not absorb moisture, so freeze-thaw cycles that crack wood or warp foam board do not affect the panel itself. UV-printed ink bonds directly to the aluminum surface and stays flexible enough to handle temperature swings without cracking or peeling. We've seen panels stay flat and fully readable through multiple winters without any structural change.
Will the Printed Colors on My Outdoor Aluminum Sign Fade After the First Summer?
No. UV-printed graphics on .040 aluminum typically resist fading for 5 to 7 years of direct sun exposure. The ink cures instantly during printing and bonds to the aluminum surface rather than sitting on top of it. That's why it holds up far longer than digitally printed vinyl applied over a substrate. Slight color dulling may appear after year 5 or 6 in harsh southern sun, but the sign stays readable well beyond that point.
How Are the Pre-Drilled Holes Positioned?
By default, we place holes at all 4 corners, roughly 0.75 in from each edge. You can specify custom hole positions in the configurator or note them in the design file. Keep all critical text and logos at least 1 in from any hole position so the hardware does not cover your content.
What Is the Turnaround Time for a Custom Metal Outdoor Sign?
Standard production runs 1 to 2 business days after you approve your proof. Orders placed before 12 PM EST on a business day enter production the same day. Shipping time depends on your location and the carrier you choose at checkout.
Do I See a Proof Before My Sign Goes to Print?
Yes, always. We send a free digital proof within 24 hours of your order showing the exact print layout, hole positions, and corner style. Production does not start until you approve it. That step is not optional, and it protects both sides.
Get your artwork right
Resolution determines how sharp your text and logo look at close range. We accept PDF, PNG, JPG, and AI files. AI (Adobe Illustrator vector) is the best choice for logos because vector art scales without losing edge sharpness. For raster files (PNG or JPG), 150 DPI is the floor. Go with 300 DPI for any sign under 4 ft wide where viewers step within arm's reach and can spot a soft edge.
- Color mode
- Set your color mode to CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black combined), not RGB. RGB is for screens. CMYK matches how our UV printer lays ink, so the colors you see in your file are the colors that come out on the aluminum panel.
- Bleed
- Build your file with 0.25 in bleed on all four sides and keep all critical text and logos at least 0.5 in from the edge. Also keep text and logos at least 1 in away from any pre-drilled hole position.
Not sure where the holes land? Use our free online design tool with hole-position templates built in. Or hand the layout to our professional design service and we build it from scratch. Upload your sign artwork and our team sends you a free digital proof showing the exact print layout, mounting holes, and corner style within 24 hours.

Care instructions
Product care
- Aluminum is about as low-maintenance as a sign material gets. Wipe the face with a damp cloth and mild soap 1 to 2 times per year to clear road grime and surface dust. Do not aim a pressure washer directly at the printed surface or scrub with abrasive pads. Either one dulls UV-printed graphics faster than normal weathering would.
- Inspect your mounting hardware once a year. Screws and bolts on outdoor signs in high-wind areas can loosen over time. Use stainless steel fasteners at coastal locations to prevent the hardware from corroding, even though the aluminum panel itself will not.
- UV-printed graphics may show slight color dulling after 5 or more years of direct sun. The panel stays structurally sound well past that point. Reorder a fresh panel when the print no longer reads clearly from your target viewing distance.
