How to orderSpecifications
Custom Sintra Signs are rigid boards made from expanded PVC (a solid, dense plastic with no foam core) and UV printed in full color on a smooth matte surface. They hold flat in humid environments and covered outdoor areas where foam board fails. Best for indoor retail displays, point-of-sale signage, and semi-outdoor covered locations.
- Material
- Sintra expanded PVC. Solid, dense plastic sheet in 1 mm, 3 mm, and 6 mm thicknesses. Denser and more rigid than standard foam board across all three sizes.
- Print Method
- Direct UV print. Ink applies directly to the board surface and cures instantly by UV light for a scratch-resistant finish that does not peel or lift.
- Color Output
- Full CMYK color. Reproduces the complete color range in your artwork using cyan, magenta, yellow, and black ink.
- Finishing
- Smooth matte surface on all thicknesses. No laminate layer added. Reduces glare under retail and office lighting.
- Size Range
- Custom sizes available. Standard sizes include 12x18 in, 18x24 in, and 24x36 in. Larger custom dimensions vary by thickness selected.
- Indoor/Outdoor Rating
- Indoor use and semi-outdoor covered areas (awnings, covered walkways). Not rated for sustained direct weather exposure.
- Single/Double-Sided
- Single-sided or double-sided printing available on all thicknesses. Double-sided suits hanging signs visible from both directions.
- Weight
- Slightly heavier than standard foam board due to solid PVC construction. Lighter than aluminum or acrylic signs of the same size.

Solid Expanded PVC With No Foam Core to Absorb Moisture
Sintra is a solid expanded PVC board with no hollow or foam center. Available in 1 mm, 3 mm, and 6 mm thicknesses. Standard foam board sandwiches a polystyrene core between two face sheets, and that core absorbs moisture when humidity rises. Sintra has no inner layer to reach, so your sign stays flat in covered outdoor areas and humid retail spaces where foam board would bow within days. Warp-resistant construction. Built into the material itself.
Full-Color CMYK UV Print on a Smooth Matte Surface
UV ink cures directly onto Sintra's smooth matte surface, bonding to the board without a laminate layer between the ink and the substrate. CMYK (the 4-color process using cyan, magenta, yellow, and black) reproduces the full range of colors in your artwork. No laminate means nothing to peel, bubble, or lift at the edges. The matte finish cuts glare under retail fluorescents and office lighting, so graphics read clearly at close range. Crisp edges. Bold color. No surface haze.
At A2Z Printing Hub, every Sintra order runs through direct UV print on the same smooth matte surface regardless of thickness selected.
Three Thickness Options From 1 mm to 6 mm
Three thicknesses give you a practical range: 1 mm for counter cards and frame inserts, 3 mm for standard wall and easel displays, and 6 mm for large panels or freestanding signs. A small counter card doesn't need the weight of a 6 mm board. A large wall panel cannot flex or bow mid-display. Matching board weight to display size keeps your setup sturdy and your shipping costs sensible.

Ideal for
Not the best fit for
Sintra handles covered outdoor areas but is not rated for months of direct sun and rain. For long-term outdoor signage, Metal Signs in .040 aluminum last 5 or more years without degrading.
Large permanent building installations need a heavier substrate. Acrylic Signs and Metal Signs are the right call for permanent wall-mounted displays.
Signs that need to roll up or fold for transport between venues are a poor match for any rigid board. Custom Banners pack flat, ship in a tube, and move between locations easily.
How to choose
Use these buying points to choose the right Custom Sintra Signs configuration.
-
Sintra Versus Foam Board Comes Down to Moisture
Foam board works fine in a dry, climate-controlled interior. But near a loading dock, under a covered walkway, or in a grocery store cooler aisle, moisture reaches the foam core within days and warping follows. Sintra is solid expanded PVC with no core to absorb anything, so humid environments typically don't damage it. Go with Sintra any time your sign faces humidity, covered outdoor air, or spots where condensation builds. Stick with foam board only when the space stays consistently dry and cost is the main concern.
-
Thickness Matches Your Display Size and Mounting Setup
-
Small Format and Frame Inserts
Use 1 mm for counter cards and frame inserts roughly 12x18 in or smaller. At that size, 1 mm carries enough rigidity without adding unnecessary weight to a small display.
-
Mid-Range Wall and Easel Displays
Step up to 3 mm for standard wall panels and easel displays in the 18x24 in to 24x36 in range. That thickness holds flat under its own weight and mounts cleanly to most wall surfaces.
-
Large Panels and Freestanding Signs
Choose 6 mm for any sign that stands upright without a frame behind it or for large panels over 24x36 in. The added thickness keeps the board from flexing at the corners.
-
Sintra Versus Metal or Acrylic for Longer Runs
Sintra covers semi-permanent indoor displays and covered outdoor areas lasting weeks to a few months. That's the honest range. For a sign exposed to direct sun and rain for 6 months or longer, Metal Signs in .040 aluminum are the right call. For a permanent lobby or reception installation where the finish matters as much as the function, Acrylic Signs give you a cleaner look that Sintra cannot match.
-
Single-Sided Versus Double-Sided Depends on Viewer Position
Order single-sided if your sign mounts flush to a wall or sits in a frame with a solid backing. Order double-sided if it hangs from a ceiling hook or stands in an open area where people approach from both directions.
Pair it with
Finish the Sidewalk Display
A Sintra sign covers your indoor or covered wall space. But sidewalk foot traffic needs something at eye level near the entrance. An A-Frame Sign holds your rigid board upright on any flat surface without wall mounting.
Lighter or Heavier Rigid Materials
Sintra sits in the middle of the rigid sign range. Step down to Custom PVC Foam Board Signs for dry indoor use where cost matters most. Or go up to Custom Gator Board Signs for maximum rigidity and a warp-resistant wood-fiber face on gallery-quality mounts.
When Sintra Is Not the Right Fit
Covered outdoor areas are Sintra's range. For signs exposed to direct sun and rain for 6 months or more, Metal Signs in .040 aluminum handle sustained weather without degrading. For permanent lobby installations, Acrylic Signs give a cleaner frosted or clear look that Sintra cannot match.
Large-Format and Flexible Alternatives
Rigid boards do not roll or fold for transport. Custom Banners pack flat, ship in a tube, and hang from grommets, making them easier to move between venues. Add Retractable Banner Stands next to a rigid panel display for tall vertical messaging that packs into a single carry bag.
FAQs
Get your artwork right
Accepted file formats are PDF, PNG, JPG, and AI. Vector files (AI or PDF built from vector art) work best for logos and sharp-edged text because they scale without losing crispness.
- Resolution
- Resolution matters more than people think. Set your file to at least 150 DPI. For any sign under 24 in on the short side, 300 DPI is the better target because viewers get close enough to spot a soft edge. Keep critical text and logos at least 0.5 in from the edge to avoid cutoff.
- Color mode
- Set your color mode to CMYK before exporting. RGB files convert on our end, but colors may shift slightly, and the matte surface of Sintra can make that shift more noticeable.
- Bleed
- Worth knowing: no bleed is needed on rigid boards. Print goes straight to the cut edge.

Care instructions
Product care
- **Cleaning your Sintra sign:** Wipe the printed surface with a soft cloth dampened with mild soap and water. Sintra is more chemical-resistant than foam board, but avoid harsh solvents. They can dull the smooth matte finish over time.
- **Storage and environment:** Store flat and dry when the sign is not in use. Do not lean boards at a sharp angle for weeks at a stretch, since even solid PVC develops a slight bow under its own weight over time. For covered outdoor use, bring the sign indoors during heavy rain or sustained wind. And keep Sintra away from heat sources above 140 degrees F. PVC softens at high temperatures, which causes the board to lose its flat shape.
