How to orderSpecifications
Custom Name Decals are text-focused vinyl decals cut from 4 mil white PVC calendar film with a matte finish and permanent adhesive. UV printing locks in full-color lettering for names, addresses, phone numbers, and website URLs. Custom Name Decals suit mailbox lettering, boat registration, storefront names, and door identification on almost any smooth surface.

4 Mil PVC Calendar Film Die-Cut to Your Text Shape
PVC calendar film (a thin, flexible vinyl sheet) runs 4 mil thick on every name decal we produce. That thinness matters: the film conforms to slightly curved surfaces like mailbox doors and rounded boat hulls without cracking or lifting at the edges. And because each decal is die-cut, the vinyl follows the exact outline of your letters with no white border left behind. Just crisp lettering, nothing else.
UV Printing at 720 DPI Minimum on a Matte Finish
UV printing cures ink instantly under ultraviolet light. Color locks into the surface rather than sitting on top of it, so you get a scratch-resistant, waterproof face that stays bold on the matte finish without glare washing out lettering in direct sun. A2Z Printing Hub runs 720 DPI as the floor on every order, so thin strokes in a business name or small address characters hold their shape at the edges.
Permanent Adhesive Rated 3 to 5 Years Outdoors
The permanent adhesive bonds firmly to painted metal, glass, plastic, and smooth wood. Your name or business lettering stays flat and tight for 3 to 5 years outdoors. But when it's time to remove the decal, low heat from a heat gun and a slow peel release it cleanly. No torn paint, no sticky residue left behind on the surface.

Ideal for
Not the best fit for
Vehicle-specific placement decals sized for a car hood, truck door, or bumper panel aren't the right match here. Vehicle Decals include vehicle-type sizing templates and placement guides built for those surfaces.
Full window coverage or perforated see-through graphics need a different material entirely. Window Decals cover perforated vinyl and static cling options for that use case.
Floor identification decals for foot traffic in warehouses or retail aisles need non-slip lamination. Floor Decals use a 3 mil vinyl base plus 7 mil lamination rated for that surface.
How to choose
Use these buying points to choose the right Custom Name Decals configuration.
-
Die-Cut Text vs. a Full-Rectangle Decal
The surface behind your lettering decides this one. Die-cut text is the right call for glass doors, painted mailboxes, boat hulls, and any surface where a white background rectangle would look out of place. Upload your text on a transparent background and we cut around each letter edge exactly. But if you want a solid colored background behind the text, a standard rectangle decal costs less to produce and ships just as fast.
-
Matching Adhesive Strength to Your Surface
Permanent adhesive on 4 mil PVC bonds to painted metal, glass, plastic, and smooth wood. Worth knowing: removal needs a heat gun and a slow peel, so plan ahead on surfaces you expect to repaint or replace within 1 to 2 years. For a rental property or a temporary display where you can't leave any residue, check Window Decals for cling-based alternatives instead.
-
Sizing Your Lettering for the Viewing Distance
Letter height drives readability at distance. At roughly 10 ft, 1 in tall letters are the floor. For mailbox numbers read from a car at 20 ft, go 3 in to 4 in tall. For a storefront name read from across a parking lot at 40 ft to 50 ft, plan for 6 in to 8 in tall lettering. Enter your custom size in the configurator and the proof shows you the exact output before we print anything.

Name Decals vs. Custom Vinyl Door Decals for Commercial Doors
Name decals cut to the letter shape work well when you need text only on a door surface. Custom Vinyl Door Decals are sized and laid out for full commercial door panels and include room for suite numbers, hours, logo, and compliance text in one organized layout. If your door needs more than a name, go with Custom Vinyl Door Decals. One product, one panel, one proof.
Pair it with
Finish the Full Door Layout
Name decals handle the text, but a full commercial door often needs more. Custom Vinyl Door Decals add suite numbers, hours, logo, and compliance text in one organized panel sized for the whole door surface. For glass doors where a white backing would block the view, Custom Clear Vinyl Decals let the surface show through behind your lettering.
Match the Surface, Not Just the Shape
Some surfaces call for a different product. Custom Die Cut Vinyl Decals handle logo shapes, icons, and graphics cut to any outline beyond text alone.
Step Up to Rigid or Portable Signage
Some storefronts and offices need a freestanding or mounted alternative alongside a vinyl decal. Custom Signs give you a rigid option for walls and facades. A-Frame Signs add sidewalk-level messaging that pairs naturally with door and window lettering.
Cover More Surface Types
Vehicle Decals include vehicle-type sizing templates and placement guides for car doors, truck panels, and fleet assets. Name decals don't include those guides. Window Decals cover perforated and static cling options for full window coverage or removable seasonal displays.
FAQs
Will the Permanent Adhesive Pull Paint Off My Mailbox or Boat Hull at Removal?
The short answer: not on factory-finished or properly cured surfaces. Apply low heat from a heat gun or hair dryer for 20 to 30 seconds per section, then peel slowly from one corner. Any adhesive residue left behind cleans off with rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth. Do not skip the heat step on painted metal surfaces, because cold peeling pulls harder than the adhesive needs to.
How Long Will Name Decals Last on a Surface That Gets Direct Sun and Rain?
Outdoor-rated 3 to 5 years on painted metal, glass, and plastic. UV-cured ink on 4 mil PVC resists fading, water, and salt air through that full window. Indoors away from direct sun, the adhesive bond and color hold even longer. Salt water exposure on a boat hull shortens the range only if the edges lift and water gets underneath, which a clean, dry application prevents.
Can I See Exactly How My Text Will Look Before You Print It?
Yes. Every order includes a free digital proof showing your exact letter shape, size, and color output. We do not start production until you approve that proof. So if a letter spacing looks off or a font size reads smaller than you expected, you catch it before any ink touches vinyl.
My Lettering Has Thin Strokes and Small Characters. Will the Die-Cut Machine Cut Those Cleanly?
Thin strokes cut cleanly down to about 0.25 in wide at the narrowest point. Below that, the vinyl between letter segments gets too narrow to hold during weeding (the process of removing the vinyl outside the cut line). For script fonts or condensed lettering under 1 in tall, we recommend reviewing the proof carefully and confirming stroke width before approving.
How Fast Can I Get Custom Name Decals for a Boat Registration Deadline or a Store Opening?
Orders placed before 12 PM EST go into production the same day. Standard production runs 1 to 2 business days, and decals ship flat on a backing sheet with application instructions included. Most buyers in the continental US receive their order within 3 to 5 business days total from order date.
Get your artwork right
Resolution drives letter clarity more than most buyers expect. We accept PDF, AI, PNG, and JPG files. Minimum 150 DPI works for large lettering. For any text under 4 in tall, go 300 DPI so thin strokes and small characters stay sharp at the edges.
- Color mode
- Set your color mode to CMYK (the 4-color process using cyan, magenta, yellow, and black) before you export. RGB files look different on screen than they do in print, and CMYK matches our output directly. Add 0.25 in of bleed on all sides and keep your text at least 0.5 in inside the cut line so no letter clips during die-cutting.
- Artwork setup
- For die-cut name decals specifically, submit your text on a transparent background. That tells the cutter exactly where each letter ends. Outlined fonts in AI and PDF files prevent substitution errors when we open your file.

Care instructions
Product care
- Wait 72 hours after applying your name decal before exposing it to water or washing the surface. The adhesive needs full cure time to bond completely against painted metal, glass, or plastic.
- Clean the decal face with mild soap, water, and a soft cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, solvent-based products, or wax directly on the UV-printed surface. For boat hull and outdoor equipment decals, rinse with fresh water after salt water exposure to keep the adhesive bond tight at the edges.
- To remove, apply low heat from a heat gun or hair dryer for 20 to 30 seconds per section and peel slowly from one corner. Any adhesive residue left behind cleans off with rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth. And because permanent adhesive releases cleanly with heat, you won't damage painted surfaces on a careful slow peel.
