How to orderSpecifications
Custom School Signs run on 3/16 in white foam core, a rigid panel built from a polystyrene core bonded between two smooth bright white faces. These panels suit any indoor campus application: room labels, department names, lobby directories, and wayfinding. Not rated for outdoor exposure.
- Material
- 3/16 in white foam core with a polystyrene core and smooth bright white faces.Rigid enough for wall and frame mounting, but not rated for prolonged outdoor exposure or moisture.
- Print Method
- Direct UV print, ink applied to the surface and cured instantly by ultraviolet light.Produces a scratch-resistant, waterproof finish without needing a laminate layer over the print.
- Color Output
- CMYK full color (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black inks combined).Reproduces any school palette, including team colors, mascot graphics, and brand-matched department colors.
- Finishing
- Flat cut edges. No grommets or hardware on standard panels.Panels mount with adhesive strips, slide into frames, or lean against a surface.
- Size Range
- Custom sizes available to match your frame opening or mounting location.Confirm your frame dimensions before ordering to avoid sizing mismatches at installation.
- Indoor/Outdoor Rating
- Indoor use only. Outdoor exposure causes face delamination and edge softening within days.Keep panels away from south-facing windows where prolonged sun exposure yellows the white face.
- Single/Double-Sided
- Single-sided or double-sided printing available.Double-sided panels work for freestanding presentation boards and directory inserts visible from both directions.
- Weight
- Very lightweight, a fraction of aluminum or acrylic at the same size.Large campus orders ship at lower freight cost and install without heavy mounting hardware.

3/16 in Foam Core Built for Indoor Campus Signage
Foam core runs a polystyrene center bonded between two smooth bright white faces at 3/16 in thick. That thickness gives each panel enough stiffness to mount flush in a standard door frame insert or hang flat on a wall without warping. Rigid enough to stay straight. Light enough to carry a full hallway's worth of signs in one trip.
CMYK Full-Color UV Print Across Every Sign in the System
Direct UV printing delivers a scratch-resistant, waterproof finish without a laminate layer. Ink goes straight onto the foam core surface and cures instantly under ultraviolet light. CMYK output, combining cyan, magenta, yellow, and black inks, reproduces your exact school palette across every panel. So your room numbers, department name signs, and wayfinding arrows all match from the main lobby to the last classroom door on the farthest wing.
Campus-Wide Ordering With ADA-Ready Design Support
A2Z Printing Hub produces school sign systems as a single order, applying your brand colors and fonts consistently across every building and hallway. ADA-compliant layout options (covering sans-serif fonts, contrast ratios, and Braille placement) are available at the design stage, not as an afterthought. One order. One design file. Every sign on campus reads the same.

Ideal for
Not the best fit for
Outdoor building identification exposed to rain or direct sun. Foam core is rated for indoor use only. Go with Custom Building Signs on aluminum for exterior mounting.
Temporary spirit week displays or gym ceiling banners that need to span a large wall or hang overhead. School Banners on PVC Flex vinyl handle those jobs.
Vehicle or bus fleet identification needs a removable solution. Magnetic Signs handle that without adhesive residue.
How to choose
Use these buying points to choose the right Custom School Signs configuration.
-
One Sign vs. a Full Campus System
A single replacement panel for one classroom door works fine as a standalone order. But most schools save time and money ordering the complete campus set at once. Volume pricing applies at 10 or more signs, and one design file keeps every panel consistent from the main lobby down to the last storage room door. Start by listing every sign location before you upload anything.
-
Matching ADA Requirements for Door and Room Signs
Here's the thing: not every foam core panel automatically meets ADA standards. Your district may require a sans-serif font, a 70 percent minimum contrast ratio, and Grade 2 Braille with tactile raised lettering. If those rules apply, note them in your order comments so our team flags the file before production starts. Skipping this step means reprints, and reprints mean delays before the school year opens.

Foam Core vs. Aluminum for Your School's Sign Locations
Foam core is the right call for any sign that lives indoors in a frame or on a wall with adhesive strips. It's lightweight, rigid, and prints sharp full-color CMYK on every panel.
-
When Foam Core Works
Any hallway, classroom, office suite, or athletic facility sign mounted indoors qualifies. A 3/16 in foam core panel holds flat in a standard door frame insert without warping under normal indoor conditions.
-
When to Switch to Aluminum
For exterior building identification or any sign exposed to rain and direct sun, go with aluminum. It holds up 5 or more years outdoors without rust or face delamination. Foam core will soften and separate within days of outdoor exposure.
-
Single-Sided vs. Double-Sided Panels
Single-sided panels cover most door and wall applications. Choose double-sided when the sign sits in a freestanding frame, hangs from a ceiling bracket, or serves as a directory insert that staff read from both sides of a hallway. Double-sided adds no weight worth noting, but it does affect your design file setup, so confirm before you upload.
Pair it with
Extend the Campus Sign System Beyond Foam Core
Foam core covers every door, hallway, and room. But your campus has spaces these panels cannot reach. School Banners on PVC flex vinyl cover gym walls, hallway ceiling spans, and outdoor spirit displays. Custom Directional Arrow Signs push your wayfinding from hallway intersections out to parking lot entrances. Custom Directory Signs give the main lobby a multi-department listing board that ties every building together.
When the Location Calls for a Different Material
Foam core is the right call indoors. For anything exposed to weather, you need a tougher substrate. Custom Building Signs on aluminum hold up through rain and direct sun for 5 or more years without rust or face delamination. Custom Lobby Signs on acrylic give your reception area a thick, sturdy panel on standoff mounts that float the sign off the wall.
Different Sign Functions Inside the Same School
Some sign jobs need a format foam core panels don't cover. A-Frame Signs work at building entrances and event check-in points where a freestanding sign directs foot traffic without wall mounting. Window Decals brand glass entry doors and storefront-style windows without blocking sightlines.
FAQs
Will Foam Core Panels Hold Up on School Walls for a Full Academic Year?
Yes, indoors. A 3/16 in foam core panel mounted with adhesive strips or seated in a door frame insert holds flat and clean through a full 9 to 10 month school year. No warping, peeling, or fading under normal indoor conditions. Keep panels away from south-facing windows where direct sun hits the surface for hours daily. That sustained UV exposure will yellow the white face and fade printed colors over weeks, even indoors.
Can We Order a Consistent Design Across Every Building on Campus?
That's exactly how most schools order. Submit your brand colors in CMYK values, your fonts, and your layout once. We apply that system to every panel in the order, from the main lobby directory down to individual classroom doors, so nothing mismatches across buildings. Volume pricing applies automatically at 10 or more signs, with deeper discounts at 25 and 50 units.
How Do We Handle ADA Requirements When Ordering Room and Door Signs?
Note your ADA requirements in the order comments before uploading your file. Our team checks the layout for sans-serif font use, 70 percent minimum contrast ratio, and correct Braille placement before production starts. If your district needs tactile raised lettering and Grade 2 Braille, flag that specifically. ADA signs with tactile elements typically add 1 to 2 production days to your order timeline.
What Happens If a Sign Arrives Damaged or Colors Do Not Match the Approved Proof?
Send us a photo within 5 business days of delivery. We reprint and reship at no cost. The proof you approve before production shows the exact layout, colors, and cut lines, so a color mismatch between the proof and the finished panel is on us to fix. Damaged-in-shipping panels qualify for the same reprint policy.
How Fast Can a Full Campus Sign Order Ship Before the School Year Starts?
Standard foam core orders ship in 1 to 2 business days after proof approval. Campus system orders of 20 or more signs typically ship within 2 to 3 business days. Orders placed before 12 PM EST enter production the same day. ADA panels with tactile lettering add 1 to 2 days. Order your full system at least 2 weeks before the first day of classes to cover proof review, production, and transit time with room to spare.
Get your artwork right
Resolution makes or breaks a sign that students and visitors read from 3 to 6 ft away. We accept PDF, PNG, JPG, and AI files. AI vector files work best for logos because they scale without losing any edge sharpness.
- Minimum resolution
- 150 DPI. For any sign under 24 in wide, 300 DPI is the better target. At that viewing distance, a soft edge shows.
- Bleed
- 0.25 in on all four sides. This gives the cutter a clean trim without pulling your design short.
- Safe zone
- Keep all text and logos at least 0.5 in from each edge so nothing important lands in the cut zone.
- Color mode
- CMYK, not RGB. CMYK matches how UV ink lays down on the foam core surface, so your school colors come out on the panel the way they look in your file. Convert all fonts to outlines before uploading.

Care instructions
Product care
- Wipe foam core panels with a lightly damp cloth to remove dust and fingerprints. Do not soak the surface or let water pool on the edges. Moisture softens the polystyrene core over time and causes the white face to lift.
- Store panels flat when they're not mounted. Leaning foam core against a wall at an angle for more than a few days causes a permanent bow that makes flush wall mounting difficult. Keep signs away from south-facing windows, even indoors. UV exposure over several weeks yellows the white face and fades printed colors.
- Replace any panel showing edge delamination, corner damage, or visible fading. Foam core is a budget-friendly material, and reorder panels match your original campus specs exactly.
