.040 Aluminum With Direct UV Print on an Octagonal Shape

.040 aluminum (roughly 1mm thick rigid metal, the industry-standard thickness for commercial signage) carries direct UV ink cured instantly by UV light for a scratch-resistant, waterproof finish. The metal itself does not rust, and the ink bonds to the surface rather than sitting on top of it. So you don't replace the sign after the first winter, or the second. A2Z Printing Hub prints every octagonal stop sign on this same substrate, whether you order 1 or 50.

MUTCD-Standard Red and Reflective Sheeting Option

The octagonal red format follows MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices) color and shape conventions, the same recognized standard drivers respond to on public roads. Reflective sheeting bounces headlights back toward the driver for night visibility, so your intersection stays controlled after dark. Engineer-grade retroreflective material (a coating that returns headlight beams directly toward the source) is available as an add-on on any size. Bold white lettering reads cleanly at roughly 20 ft under headlights.

Three Sizes and Straight or Rounded Corners

Three sizes run from 12x18 in up to 36x24 in with straight or rounded corner options. Rounded corners fit most standard U-channel post brackets and reduce sharp edges at pedestrian height. Straight corners suit high-mount post installations where edge contact is not a concern. Pick your size and corner style before uploading artwork, and the configurator shows the exact layout.

Ideal for

HOA communities installing stop control at private road intersections where the municipality does not place signs.
Parking lot managers adding stop points at exits where vehicles cross pedestrian walkways.
College and university facilities teams controlling vehicle flow at campus road intersections not maintained by the city.
Industrial parks with internal road networks that need intersection control between buildings.
Private residential developments setting up traffic control before roads transfer to a municipality.
Churches, hospitals, and schools managing on-site traffic at driveways and internal lot intersections.
Property managers replacing faded or damaged stop signs on existing posts without waiting on a government work order.

Not the best fit for

Public road intersections maintained by a city, county, or state agency. Those signs are government-installed. Contact your local transportation department for any public street intersection.

General parking lot rule signs like reserved spaces or no-parking zones. Custom Parking Signs and Custom No Parking Signs cover those needs with the correct color and format.

Indoor lobby or office directional signage. Custom Business Signs handle room labels, directories, and interior wayfinding where regulatory traffic formats do not apply.

How to choose

Use these buying points to choose the right Custom Stop Signs configuration.

  1. Size Matches Your Road Speed and Intersection Width

The 18x24 in size covers most private road intersections and parking lot exits running under 25 mph. Drivers approaching at low speed read an 18x24 in sign clearly from roughly 75 ft out. Go with 36x24 in on any wider road or anywhere approach speeds run higher. Pick your size in the configurator before uploading artwork so the proof reflects the correct layout.

  2. Reflective Sheeting for Night Visibility

Here's the thing: any sign facing vehicle headlights after dark needs reflective sheeting. Engineer-grade retroreflective material (a laminate that bounces headlight beams back toward the driver) keeps the sign readable from roughly 500 ft at night. Non-reflective print is fine for daytime-only lots with no after-dark traffic. But most HOA communities, campus roads, and commercial parking lots see vehicle traffic after sunset. When in doubt, choose reflective.

  3. Corner Style and Post Hardware Compatibility

Rounded corners fit most standard U-channel post brackets and reduce sharp edges on signs installed at pedestrian height (roughly 7 ft from grade on a standard post). Straight corners work for high-mount installations where pedestrian contact is not a factor. Check your existing post hardware before selecting a corner style. A rounded-corner sign on a bracket sized for straight corners will not seat flush.

  4. Confirming This Sign Fits a Private Road or Lot

These signs are for private roads, parking lots, HOA communities, and campuses only. Public road stop signs go through city, county, or state agencies and are not available for private buying or installation. If your intersection sits on a public street, contact your local transportation department. If it sits on private property, you're in the right place.

Pair it with

Complete the Intersection

A stop sign controls the approach. But two more signs finish the job. A speed limit sign sets the corridor speed before drivers reach your intersection, and a street name sign identifies the road for residents, delivery drivers, and emergency services.

Manage the Lot Once Drivers Stop

Your stop sign brings traffic to a halt at the lot exit. Custom Parking Signs and Custom No Parking Signs handle what happens next: where drivers may go, where they cannot park, and which spaces are reserved.

Boost Night Visibility Across the Property

Any sign facing headlights after dark needs reflective sheeting. Custom Reflective Signs covers other regulatory signs on the same property that share the same night-visibility need.

Mark the Perimeter Before Drivers Reach the Intersection

Custom Private Property Signs identify ownership at the boundary. A-Frame Signs at the entrance give drivers a portable, ground-level warning before they reach your stop-controlled intersection.

FAQs

Will Drivers Actually Stop for a Sign on a Private Road?

The short answer: yes, when the sign follows the format drivers already recognize. Our octagonal red format matches MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices) color and shape conventions, the same standard used on public roads nationwide. Drivers respond to the shape before they read the text. Pair it with reflective sheeting so the sign stays visible after dark and doesn't disappear in low light.

What Size Do I Need for a Parking Lot Exit Versus a Private Road Intersection?

For a parking lot exit or low-speed private road under 25 mph, the 18x24 in sign is the standard choice. Wider roads or any approach where vehicles travel faster than 25 mph call for the 36x24 in size. The larger sign gives drivers roughly 30 to 40 additional feet of reading distance at speed. When in doubt, size up.

Do I Need Reflective Sheeting, or Is Standard Print Enough?

Standard (non-reflective) print works for lots with no vehicle traffic after dark. Any sign facing headlights after sunset needs engineer-grade reflective sheeting. Without it, the sign surface absorbs light instead of returning it, and a driver at 50 ft may not register the sign until it's too late. Reflective sheeting is available as an add-on in the configurator for any size.

How Long Will a Custom Stop Sign Hold Up Outdoors?

.040 aluminum does not rust, and direct UV-cured ink resists fading longer than solvent-based alternatives. Outdoor lifespan runs 5 or more years in direct sun and weather. Reflective sheeting typically holds retroreflectivity for 7 to 10 years before visible degradation. You won't need to replace the sign after the first winter.

Can I Order a Double-Sided Custom Stop Sign for a Two-Way Intersection?

Yes. Double-sided printing is available for any size and lets both faces carry the full-color MUTCD octagonal red layout. It's the right call for a two-way stop where drivers approach from opposite directions on the same post. Select double-sided printing in the configurator at checkout.

Get your artwork right

Custom Stop Signs print from PDF, PNG, JPG, or AI files. AI (vector format) is the best choice for logos and text because it scales without softening edges. For raster files like PNG or JPG, 300 DPI is the target. 150 DPI is the floor, but anything under 300 DPI on a sign smaller than 18x24 in risks a soft edge that shows up on the final print.

We accept PDF PNG JPG AI
Color mode
Set your color mode to CMYK, not RGB. CMYK matches how we print, so colors on screen come out as expected on the sign face. MUTCD red background is PMS 185 C or its CMYK equivalent. White lettering needs a minimum 1 in cap height for readability at roughly 20 ft.
Bleed and safe zone
Add 0.25 in bleed on all four sides and keep text and logos at least 0.5 in from the edge. The safe zone protects your lettering from the trim line on octagonal die-cut shapes.

Care instructions

Product care

  • Wipe the sign face with a damp cloth and mild soap once or twice a year to clear road dust and grime. Aluminum does not rust, so no protective coating is needed between cleanings.
  • Do not scrub reflective sheeting with abrasive pads or steel wool. Abrasion damages the retroreflective surface (the layer that bounces headlight beams back toward drivers) and cuts night visibility. Use a soft cloth only.
  • Inspect post-mounting hardware every year. Wind vibration and nearby vehicle traffic loosen bolts over time, so retighten any loose brackets before the sign shifts out of the driver's sight line.
  • Trim vegetation around the sign quarterly. Overgrown branches block the octagonal silhouette and reduce stopping distance for drivers approaching the intersection.
